The Tempest Synopsis
The Backstory and The Storm
Years ago, the ambitious Antonio betrayed her sister Prospero, usurping her title as Duke of Milan and exiling her and her infant daughter, Miranda, to a remote island. Now, learning that Antonio and her ally, King Alonso of Naples, are sailing nearby, Prospero uses her sorcery (with the help of Ariel, an airy spirit) to conjure a massive tempest, shipwrecking them and scattering the survivors across the island.
The Island's Parallel Plots
While Miranda falls in instant love with Alonso’s stranded son, Ferdinand—a match Prospero secretly approves of but tests with hard labor—three separate plots unfold across the island:
The Royal Betrayal: Replaying her old habits, Antonio attempts to persuade the King's brother to assassinate Alonso and seize the throne, but Prospero’s spirit servant, Ariel, thwarts the murder.
The Comic Rebellion: The island's enslaved monster, Caliban, aligns with a pair of drunken shipwrecked servants (Stefano and Trinculo). Together, they plot to assassinate Prospero and rule the island themselves.
The Lovers' Pledge: Ferdinand and Miranda pledge their devotion to one another, prompting Prospero to bless their union with a magical pageant.
Resolution: Mercy Over Revenge
Remembering Caliban’s plot, Prospero cuts the celebration short and easily foils the rebels using magical hounds. She then draws Antonio and the rest of the nobility into a enchanted spellbound circle.
Confronting her sister face-to-face, Prospero demands her dukedom back. Yet, choosing mercy over vengeance, she ultimately forgives Antonio, reunites the King with his safely married son, and renounces her magic forever. The company prepares to sail back to Italy, leaving behind a newly freed Ariel and Caliban.
